Grand Black marble Striking Mantel clock

£SOLD

A very handsome black marble clock of grand yet elegant proportions.

The case is in exceptionally good unrestored condition, with a simple clean outline. It is very usual to see numerous chips in black marble clocks. Given that this is over 150 years old, it has fared remarkably well. Perhaps its size and weight have helped to keep it from being moved. The thick replaced glasses to the back and front door have beveled edges, set within profiled brass frames. The base is edged with brass of a similar profile.

The gilt dial has an engine-turned centre, and to the burnished ring with black painted numerals, it is signed ALEXANDER & SON, PARIS. An adjustment square protrudes at XII, to allow for fine regulation of the timekeeping.

The eight-day bell-striking movement is stamped with Marti et Cie’s bronze medal, an award the prolific clockmakers gained in 1860. The pendulum is compensated for temperature, using a cantilever design by Ellicott. Although currently working well, the movement is to be overhauled within our workshops and guaranteed for 3 years.
