Bell-striking carriage clock with engraved dial

£2700
image_pdfimage_print

This fine carriage clock has been newly regilded to restore it to its original finish. Smaller than average at 6 1/4 inches with the handle up, the styling is a pleasing contrast of smooth polished case against a fancy dial. The case top and base have canted corners, and fluted square-profile columns to the corners. All sides and top have perfect beveled glasses.

The very pretty gilt dial is intricately engraved all over with floral swags on a cross-hatched ground, the polished chapter ring painted with black Roman numerals.

The matching blued steel Breguet style of hands are very finely fretted.

The clock has a two-train bell-striking movement, regulated by the original lever platform escapement. The bell strike has a clear and high pitch, striking the number of hours and the passing of the half hour. The backplate is signed Pg (or Pq?). We have had other clocks by the same maker (also with engraved dials), but unfortunately do not know more details of the maker’s identity.

The movement is priced to include a full overhaul of the movement; once done the clock will be guaranteed for 3 years.
