Scottish mahogany longcase clock, J Thomson of Edinburgh

This extremely pretty mahogany grandfather clock by Jonathan Thomson of Edinburgh dates to around the 1790s-1800.

The fine case has some very vibrant figured mahogany veneers and many elegant details.

The hood has contrasting light wood blind fretwork below the swan neck pediment. Flanking the dial are fluted columns. The long trunk door has beautiful flame mahogany veneers, with a pale wood line inlaid border edged in crossbanded mahogany. The flame veneers are matched on the base.

The good quality 8 day movement has four knopped pillars, and is rack striking on a bell.

The 12″ painted dial is signed for the maker, with subsidiary seconds and date dials.

A John Thomson was working in Nicholson Street, Edinburgh in 1794-1814.
