Mortar Clock from Guilmet’s Industrial Series

Guilmet-Mortar-clock

The mortar clock is one of the smaller models in Guilmet’s Industrial Series.

The gilt bronze and silver-plated mortar rests in a cradle with a rotating axle. Hence it can be tilted using the handle on top. The mortar is mounted on a fine red marble base with gilt bronze edging.

The original 2-inch white enamel has minor hairline cracks at the edges, but they do not detract from the overall excellent appearance.

The 8 day timepiece movement has a platform escapement. Both movement and bezel numbered are 383.  The clock is not signed but attributed to the French clockmaker André Romain Guilmet who produced a wide series of industrial clocks from the mid 1870s until circa 1910. Many of these were unsigned.

This clock can be found in the book, Mystery, Novelty & Fantasy Clocks, by Derek Roberts.

We currently also have an automaton windmill clock from Guilmet’s Industrial series of clock, and coming soon is a lighthouse with rotating light.
