Swiss Atmos Clock by Jaeger le Coultre

£SOLD
image_pdfimage_print

A Swiss gilt-brass Atmos clock by Jaeger leCoultre model 526-5. This model has a base with squared corners, and the pillars and top with canted corners.

The gilt case is in exceptionally good order, except for two stress cracks to the rear base of the clock. We did not spot these when buying the clock because they are at the back and are easily missed. The clock has been priced accordingly, so it is an opportunity to buy a guaranteed working Atmos clock at a really good price.

The round dial has applied gilt digits between the Arabic 12, 3, 6 and 9. The gilt hands are blued at the ends, a design which helps to easily read the time.

Serial number 411794, dating from the third quarter of the 20th century.

Atmos clocks are known as perpetual motion clocks, as they require no winding. An aneroid chamber mounted on the back of the movement contains a mixture of liquid and gas which expands and contracts with movements in temperature, and this motion winds the mainspring. Even a one degree change in temperature is sufficient to wind the clock for 2 days’ duration.

The silent operation and the torsion pendulum’s slow oscillations make these clocks very restful to watch.

  • 8 ¾ in. (22 cm.) high;
  • 7 in. (18 cm.) wide;
