Small French ormolu Portico Mantel Clock

portico-mantel-clcok

A bell striking ormolu mantel clock of small proportions, dating from the 1890s.

The portico case has highly defined ormolu castings and retains its original mercury gilding. It has clearly been well looked-after in its lifetime, being in excellent condition throughout.  The movement is supported within a drumhead casing, decorated with three rings to match the case decoration. This casing is supported by four tapering fluted columns to the stepped base cast with an egg and dart frieze to both base and top.

The back door has a material-backed sound fret.

It has a French 8-day movement, striking the hours and the passing of the half hour on a delicate bell. The decorative pendulum is in full view with this style of clock, part of the allure of a portico clock.

The dial has an engine turned centre, and an elaborately engraved bezel surrounding the black Roman numerals. It has a brocot adjustment at the XII, for fine regulation without disturbing the clock.

Matching blued steel hands.
