Regency Gilt and Bronze Fusee Mantel Clock

A finely engineered and beautifully crafted English bronze and gilt mantel clock dating from the Regency period. Fit for a regal setting, the gilded brass and bronze case has a simple elegance to it, surmounted by the figure of Cupid kneeling beside a brazier. He carries a fine ormolu bow and arrow, his quiver laying beside him. The ormolu moulded cornice and corner rosettes are particularly sharp being finely cast. The sides have oval ormolu scenes of winged cherubs gathering at a brazier. All gilding appears to be the original mercury gilding.

The signed 4.5-inch Roman and Arabic dial has gilt pierced hands.

The 8-day chain fusee movement strikes the hours on a bell. It has a strike/silent lever, operated by pulling the gilt knob on the right side of the case.

Its circular plates are decorated with an engraved geometric border and signed Favre, Pall Mall to an oval cartouche.

The stirrup pendulum is unusually well engineered with a numbered regulation scale to the rod.  The engraved lenticular bob matches the movement’s engraving, as does the pendulum locking device for transportation.

Henry Favre was watchmaker to the regent Prince of Wales (later George IV) as well as his brothers, the Dukes of York & Cumberland. Favre was working in London from 1800 – 1818 at 27 Pall Mall.

The Duchess of Kent currently has a mantel clock by Henry Favre in her Drawing Room at Frogmore House.
