Quarter striking Champleve enamel Carriage clock

champleve-enamel-carriage-clock

Probably the nicest example we have ever had the pleasure to own, this champleve enamel carriage clock is of the highest quality and aesthetic appeal.

The finely engraved gilt case retains its original mercury gilding. The back door is also engraved, with dust shutters for winding and regulation.

The enamelled panels to both sides and the dial are in exceptionally good condition, without loss. The enamel-work is a very striking Oriental-style design of an azure blue ground with gilt lines and floral decor, contained with a darker blue floral border. The dial has a gilt chapter ring with finely engraved Roman numerals.

The matching blued steel hands are highly unusual, matching the Oriental styling of the enamelling.

The quality eight day numbered movement has its original silvered lever platform numbered on the underside . The clock strikes and repeats the quarters on a pair of gongs, the hours on one gong. The front plate and dial back are both signed with AB in script, the trademark of one Antoine Baveux, born May 1846.
According to Allix’s book on carriage clocks, Tripplin wrote an article of the 1889 Exhibition, saying Baveux movements of carriage clocks were unrivalled and found their way to the best Paris finishers. He also supplied roulants to Jacot.

The movement is shown here in its unserviced state, but is to be overhauled, and the clock guaranteed for 3 years.
