A good original 8-day longcase clock by Jonathan Hinkley, Swinton (Manchester area), dating from c.1815.
The case stands 85″ tall and is distinguished by its particularly fine mahogany veneers, with cross-banded panels separated by fine stringing. It has very unusual rectangle-section pillars and a angular trunk. These are softened by the swan-neck pediment, the intricately shaped trunk door and the ogee moulding around the base of the trunk. The plinth has a strung panel which continues the flame veneers of the trunk door, and the clock is raised on bracket feet.
The 13-inch painted dial is very delicately painted with floral corners edged in raised gesso, and two crested birds of paradise or similar to the centre, typical of dial decoration of the Lancashire region.
8-day rack-striking movement, striking the hours on a bell.
Original matching heart-shaped steel hands.
Height: 85 inches (216cms)
