Antique French striking Vineyard Clock by Sarton, Toulon

The simplicity of the case of this vineyard clock give it very wide appeal. Vineyard clocks are highly decorative, and this example has colourful boullework against a black background.

The case is in solid fruit wood which has been ebonized . The case front is a moulded oval frame, hinged from above. The recessed black dial mask is protected by glass, and is beautifully inlaid with brass boullework decoration, filled with blue and red. An inner brass ring frames the dial.

The 9.5 inch glass dial is in excellent original condition, back-painted in white with roman numerals and signed SARTON, TOULON. To the centre is a brass rosette.

The original matching black steel hands are very ornate.

The movement is an eight day two-train movement with countwheel mechanism, striking the hours and the passing of the half hour on a coiled gong.
