A good antique chrome ships clock and barometer dating from c.1900, mounted on a mahogany board. The bulkhead style cases have hinged doors fitted with heavy beveled glass, both with strong latches to shut (more convenient than the screw catches on some bulkhead clocks).
Both 4-inch white enamel dials are in perfect condition. The clock has Roman numerals and the name BENZIE, COWES enamelled. They have been hand-painted with a blue sailing club pennant, which can easily be removed if preferred.
The French eight-day timepiece clock movement is wound through the dial and has a regulation slot below the XII. It has a cylinder platform escapement and the backplate is signed ‘VAP BREVETE S.G.D.G.’ in an oval. This maker’s mark is believed to be that of Victor-Athanase Pierret (1806-93) who retired in 1865, selling half his shares to Borel . The mark VAP is attributed by Tardy in ‘Dictionnaire des Horologers Francais’ to Maison Pierret-Borel et Blin of Paris, circa 1900.
The aneroid barometer has a central pointer hand fitted through the glass, for day-to-day comparison.
The firm of Benzie still exist in Cowes today. Information from their website tells us that it was established in 1862 by the late Mr. Simpson Benzie. Through his artistic application of nautical subjects to jewellery, the founder of the business gained a world-wide reputation. He was the first to design a clock to strike the ship’s bells. Since he died in 1915, his son took an active interest in the concern since 1891, to follow on similar working lines. The Royal Warrants held by the establishment are: H. M. King George V., in 1910; H. M. the Queen, 1912; H. M. King Edward, 1901; H. M. Queen Alexandra, 1901; H. M. Queen Victoria, 1885; H. R. H. the Prince of Wales, 1884; H. M. King of Greece, 1886.”
In over 130 years Benzie has proudly held no fewer than eight Royal Warrants. A Benzie clock hung on a bulkhead on the Royal Yacht, Britannia.
