A delightful hammered brass antique French novelty clock in the form of a lighthouse, dating from c.1900.
The Arts and Crafts style of case has a wealth of detail – The intricate brickwork detailing of the rocks upon which the lighthouse is based and the patterned grips of the ladder steps lead to well-cast railings. The lighthouse has a hinged and latched arched door, and windows of mottled swirled blue glass. The joints are edged with riveted brass strips.
Although a folly, this is a very well-crafted sculpture, made by an accomplished craftsman.
The top section comprises a small French drum timepiece clock, the 2 1/2-inch dial in relief, the Arabic numerals painted white to match the hands.
The caged ‘light’ cupola that crowns the clock is an early form of red plastic.
