A good early 19th century brass-inlaid mahogany bracket clock by H. Borrell, London.
This clock is smaller than normal, measuring 16" in height. The result is a finely proportioned classic English bracket clock.
The mahogany case is surmounted by a pineapple finial on a gadrooned caddy, over ringed side handles and fish scale side frets, to a plinth base on ball feet, the front panel inlaid with brass flowerheads.
The signed painted 5.75inch circular Roman dial has brass moon hands.
The well-engraved and signed movement is 8 day duration and has an anchor escapement striking on a gong.
The pendulum is particularly well constructed, similarly engraved, and is lockable for transport.
Cescinsky & Webster, in their bookEnglish Domestic Clocks, state that Henry Borrell (1794-1840) was associated with Marwick Markham, probably as successor, and illustrate a repeating bracket clock by him.
Henry Borrell is listed as clock maker in the 1808 Post Office Annual Directory of London trade directory at 15 Wilderness Row, Goswell Street, London.
