English Bracket Clocks, produced from the late 17th century, were usually mantel or table clocks - only a small number were made with brackets or even intended to be stood on them. The early types were mostly produced in ebonised cases, decorated with brass mounts and with elaborately engraved backplates. During the Regency period, inlays of brass and different wood veneers were preferred. The earlier styles came back into fashion in the Victorian era. During the Georgian period, English clockmakers were widely acknowledged to be the best in the world.
In the 19th century, the production of mantel clocks (or table clocks) moved to France, where they were mass-produced by a few prolific makers. Styling of these pieces vary enormously, but they tended to be highly decorative clocks.
We also have an interest in some of the more interesting 20th century clocks, such as the early electric clocks, and Jaeger leCoultreAtmos clocks - table clocks powered by changes in atmospheric pressure and temperature.
