Musical Longcase Clock by J Smith & Sons, Clerkenwell

SOLD
Ref: 1320
This is an absolutely clasic mahogany chiming grandfather clock from the turn of the 1900s.

The 12" brass and silvered dial bears the plaque of J Smith & Sons, Clerkenwell, a notable good quality maker of their era. The dial also shows subsidiary seconds, date and a good quality painted and silvered moonphase in the break-arch.

The eight-day musical mechanism gives a choice of Westminster and Whittington chimes on a cluster of 8 bells, and strikes the hour on a deep mellow gong. This is a classic good quality weight-driven mechanism from this period.

The case is a particularly fine quality mahogany case using fabulous veneers throughout. The trunk and base and hood, all have matching flame mahogany panels. The trunk has reeded columns to match those on the hood. The hood is a very simple dome shaped top, with dentil cornicing, and intricate fretwork sound panels to the sides.

Height is 92"
