Antique Mahogany Longcase by Latham of Macclesfield

A striking mahogany longcase clock of small proportions finely decorated with sharks' tooth marquetry inlays.

The flat top hood has a swan neck crest, topped with brass ball and spire finials, the central one with eagle. The square cross section pillars are picked out in fine delicate inlays and stringing, and marquetry, over a shaped top long trunk door, flanked with fluted pilasters. The base has a quarter veneered surround to the inlaid square, the whole raised on ogee feet.

The really pretty 13" restored dial is signed for the maker John Latham of Macclesfield, with finely painted birds. It has subsidiary seconds, and a date crescent.

Original heart shaped hands.
8 day rack striking movement with four knopped pillars.

Height : 86" (7 feet 2 inches)

John Latham was working in Macclesfield at 14 Mill Street in 1814, and by 1822 he had moved to Market Place.
