An early 18th century walnut longcase clock

The burr walnut case has a flat-top hood with overhanging cornice on brass-mounted Doric columns, the long trunk door with book matched veneer on a flat-fronted base.

The 12" square brass dial is enclosed by an engraved wheatear border with crown and cherub spandrels, the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with half quarter marks, matted centre, subsidiary seconds dial, decorated chamfered date aperture and ringed winding squares. It is signed for Thomas Speakman, London.

The quality replica movement has five knopped and ringed pillars, an anchor escapement and a rack strike on a bell.

Thomas Speakman was son of William Speakman, also a clockmaker. He was free of the Clockmakers Company from 1685-1714. This clock has a replica later movement.
