The Longcase Clock, or Grandfather Clock as it is better known, was probably first produced in the UK in the second half of the 17th century. It is believed that longcases were developed to encase the weights of the earlier Lantern wall clock. The first clocks were single handed, of 30 hour duration, but in 1675 the more accurate, longer duration 8-day movement became fashionable with the introduction of a longer one-second pendulum.
The first longcases had brass dials, arches were added in the early 18th century, then towards the end of the 18th century, overall engraving and silvering of brass dials and painted iron dials became more popular, as they were produced more cheaply.
When considering the purchase of a longcase clock, certain considerations are important.
